Marie Perkin’s, the name behind Miss Perkin’s is a woman after my own heart. She loves baking, adores tea and celebrates all that’s good about the British tea time tradition which she brings together in her Barcelona tea room.
Adorned with British bunting, a cornucopia of teapots and china and a homage to all things tea, this cutesy corner of Sants/Badal is a perfect meet up place for a ´proper brew’, a slice of home made cake and a long chat. Even the light fittings are teapots.
Despite 26 years in Barcelona, Miss Perkins hasn’t lost her heritage nor her sense of humour. Her menu extends beyond tea and cake to ‘Ploughman’s lunch’ and salads with names such as ‘Bob’s Your Uncle’, ‘Cor Blimey’ and Bee’s Knees’. There’s traditional British sandwich fillings, afternoon tea if you pre-order and even a crumpet or two. The tea selection merits a menu in itself with an extensive choice that ranges from Earl Grey, Rooibos, green teas and would you believe it…. in Barcelona…..dark, strong, feisty, Yorkshire tea!
Considering the amount of Yorkshire tea I already imbibe at the office daily it was a milky chai latte for me, which thankfully was made with wonderful fresh milk not that tetrabric UHT I so utterly detest.
The sticky date cake with a drizzle of golden syrup brought back memories of my own grandma’s date and walnut cake, forks dived between this and the light carrot cake with perfect cream cheese frosting.
If you’ve got kids in tow they’ll leave you in peace to play, or at least long enough to let you enjoy that cuppa before it goes cold.
Chintzy yes, but what true British tea room isn’t? Miss Perkin’s is a lovely spot for any homesick Brit or self-confessed anglophile who just wants a good cup of tea and a slice of cake.
